Choosing a Nursing Bra: What to Consider Early in Pregnancy

Many people find it helpful to choose a soft, supportive bra that does not pinch, has an easy closure, and leaves room for breast changes. Nursing bras are not needed right away for everyone.
Choosing a Nursing Bra: What to Consider Early in Pregnancy
Breasts often feel more sensitive in the second trimester and can change size quickly. Many people do not need a nursing bra right away, but thinking about fit early can help you avoid extra shopping later.
What to look for when fitting
- Soft support that does not press on the breasts or under the bust.
- Cups that do not squeeze breast tissue and still give full coverage.
- Wide straps, smooth seams, and breathable fabric.
- A clasp that can be opened with one hand.
- Several hook rows or some room to grow, so the bra can last longer.
Call your OB-GYN, midwife, or other clinician if a bra leaves deep marks, or if you have ongoing pain, numbness, or redness. Also call about any lump, rash, or nipple discharge on only one side.
