Bleeding, fluid leaking, severe pain, high fever, and sudden swelling or severe shortness of breath should be checked promptly. Call your provider or seek care right away when you have any of these.
Warning signs during the second trimester
Many changes in the second trimester are normal. Some symptoms, however, need quick evaluation. Your provider can help you judge how serious a symptom is by looking at what it is, how strong it feels, and how long it lasts.
Call your provider right away or go to the emergency room for these
- Any vaginal bleeding
- Fluid leaking from the vagina or a sudden gush of fluid
- Severe abdominal pain or regular cramping
- A temperature of 100.4 °F (38 °C) or higher
- A severe headache, especially with vision changes
- Sudden swelling of the face or hands, especially after 20 weeks
- Chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or fainting
- Pain, warmth, redness, or swelling in one leg
Symptoms to discuss with your provider the same day
- Pain or burning when urinating
- Vomiting that keeps you from eating or drinking
- Severe itching, especially on the palms or soles
- A fall or blow to the belly
- Severe anxiety, sadness, or hopelessness that does not ease
Get urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, fluid leaking, or a sudden drop in your baby's movements once you have been feeling regular movements. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911.
Even when a symptom turns out not to be serious, calling your provider early can bring peace of mind and help you decide on the next step.
