Nursery Safety Checklist for Your Newborn

NNova editorial team · 6 min read

The most important part of a nursery is a safe sleep space: a firm, flat surface with nothing soft or loose in the crib, and the baby sleeping on their back. Keep the room uncluttered and free of cords, small objects, and unstable furniture.

Safe sleep basics

  • Firm, flat mattress in the crib or bassinet
  • Fitted sheet only, with no loose fabric
  • Baby sleeps on their back for every sleep, naps included
  • No pillows, blankets, bumpers, or toys in the sleep space
  • Crib or bassinet meets current federal safety standards and has not been recalled

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies sleep in the same room as their parents, but on their own separate sleep surface, for at least the first six months. Many providers also suggest sharing a room without sharing a bed.

The room around the crib

  • Room kept at a comfortable temperature, not too warm
  • Enough light for night checks
  • Cords, curtains, and wires kept out of reach
  • Furniture stable and anchored to the wall
  • Changing supplies kept within adult reach
A simple, uncluttered room is usually safer than a crowded space with extra decor.

What to remove from the sleep area

  • Soft nests and sleep positioners
  • Crib bumpers and large pillows
  • Loose blankets and quilts in the crib
  • Strings, ribbons, and long cords
  • Unstable shelves, heavy items, and small pieces near the baby
If your baby was born early, has breathing concerns, or has been given separate medical guidance, ask your baby's doctor how sleep rules should apply to your child.
