Prenatal yoga in the second trimester: gentle movement for back comfort

NNova editorial team · 6 min read

Prenatal yoga may help with back comfort, posture, breathing, and mobility during the second trimester. Deep twists, lying flat on your back, and overheating are best avoided, and a class led by an instructor trained in prenatal yoga is often the safest choice.

Why yoga may help in the second trimester

Second-trimester yoga usually focuses on gentle mobility, breathing, and back support. This kind of practice may ease low back tension, help you feel more in control of your body, and make everyday movement more comfortable. Many providers say that regular, moderate activity is safe for most pregnancies, but ask your OB-GYN or midwife about any limits that apply to you.

What a safer practice often includes

  • Gentle pelvic tilts and cat-cow movements.
  • Poses supported by a wall, chair, or blocks.
  • A small, comfortable hip stretch without pain or pulling.
  • Calm breathing and a short relaxation at the end.

What to avoid or change

  • Lying flat on your back for long periods. After the first trimester, many providers suggest lying on your side or propping yourself up with pillows.
  • Deep twists and poses that press on your belly.
  • Hot yoga or any practice that makes you overheat. Drink water and rest when needed.
  • Breath holding or fast, intense breathing.
Stop the practice and contact your OB-GYN, midwife, or go to the emergency room if you have pain, vaginal bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, calf pain or swelling, or regular cramping or tightening of the uterus.
