What to pack to eat during labor

Many people find simple, easy-to-digest foods and small sips of water work best, such as bars, crackers, banana, or dried fruit. Heavy or fatty foods are often harder to tolerate, especially if nausea is present.
What to pack for labor
In labor, simple foods that give quick energy and are gentle on the stomach are often easier to tolerate. Hospital rules vary, so ask your care team what they allow before you pack.
If you might need anesthesia, a cesarean birth, or surgery, your team may limit food and drink more strictly.
What is often convenient
- water in small sips
- a sports drink or clear fluids, if your hospital allows them
- bars with a short, simple ingredient list
- crackers, toast, or rice cakes
- banana, dried fruit, or applesauce
What is often harder to tolerate
- heavy or very fatty foods
- very spicy foods
- large portions
- foods with strong smells, especially if you feel nauseated
If you have vomiting, strong thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, or weakness during labor, tell your care team right away. Staying hydrated matters as much as what you eat.
