Nesting urges in pregnancy: when the urge to clean and shop is normal and when to get help

NNova editorial team · 5 min read

The urge to nest is common in pregnancy and is often linked to anticipation and a wish for control. If it becomes compulsive, exhausting, or leads to distress or large spending, talk with your doctor, midwife, or a mental health professional.

What nesting means

Nesting is the strong urge to clean, organize, and get the home ready for a baby. It is not a medical diagnosis. Some people notice it in the second trimester, but it is often strongest in the third trimester.

Why it may happen

  • hormonal changes during pregnancy
  • anxiety and a wish for control over the future
  • a natural urge to prepare for birth and a new baby
  • tiredness and poor sleep may make the urge feel stronger

How to channel the energy safely

  • make a short to-do list and take breaks
  • choose tasks that do not involve heavy lifting, climbing on ladders, or strong fumes or cleaning chemicals
  • set a spending limit for baby shopping
  • ask family or friends to help with bigger projects
Talk with your OB-GYN, midwife, or a mental health professional if the urge becomes obsessive, keeps you from sleeping, causes panic, or leads to large spending you cannot control. Anxiety and depression during pregnancy are common and treatable. If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911 right away.
